Flower Care

Caring For Your Flowers Post Purchase

Flowers are living things & require a bit of TLC from their owners in order to obtain a maximum vase life. Vase life will vary from bloom to bloom and will also be affected by the ambient temperature but if you follow these instructions, you should enjoy your flowers for 3 to7 days.

Bouquets

  • Flowers should have a continual water source. Any length of time spent out of water can cause the vascular tissues in the stems to become blocked which stops their ability to draw water up the stem to support the bud. Once the vascular system ceases to work, your flowers will inevitably droop regardless of whether you eventually provide a water source.
  • If you think your bouquet is going to be out of water for longer than 1 hour please ask our staff to wet-pack it for you. Please note that wet-packing is suitable for approximately 1-2 hours only.
  • Never leave flowers in a parked vehicle where the outside temperature is over 24 degrees Celsius. Even if they have a water source they will still effectively bake and die.
  • Once you have the flowers at their destination
  1. prepare a vase filled with room temperature water adding flower food preservative
  2. have flower snips or secateurs ready to cut the stems (please note - household scissors are not ideal as they tend to crush the vascular tissue which can prevent the uptake of water)
  3. unwrap the bunch (over the sink if they are wet-packed) & remove any foliage that will fall under the waterline
  4. cut approximately 2.5cm from base of stem
  5. place immediately into the vase of water, making sure all stems are fully submerged
  6. Position your vase away from direct sunlight, draughts, heating vents, heat emitting appliances (think televisions, refrigerators, heaters etc
  7. position your vase away from fruit and vegetables - these give off ethylene gas which will cause flowers to deteriorate quickly
  8. change the water daily, this will help keep the build up of any bacteria to a minimum and will also ensures that your flowers have enough water particularly in the hotter weather.
  9. Roses also absorb moisture through their leaves and petals so, if it is a particularly hot day, you can mist roses lightly on the top of the bloom & on the leaves. Please note that some other flowers will not respond well to misting.
Arrangements in Floral Foam or Water Filled Vase
  • Never leave flowers in a parked vehicle where the outside temperature is over 24 degrees Celsius. They will still effectively bake and die even though they have a water source.
  • Once you have the flowers at their destination
  1. top up the arrangement with water to keep the floral foam saturated or cut stems submerged.
  2. Position your arrangement away from direct sunlight, draughts, heating vents, heat emitting appliances (think televisions, refrigerators, heaters etc.
  3. position your arrangement away from fruit and vegetables - these give off ethylene gas which will cause flowers to deteriorate quickly.
  4. check water levels daily and top up as necessary in order to avoid the floral foam drying out or water falling below stems in the vase.
  5. roses also absorb moisture through their leaves and petals so, if it is a particularly hot day, you can mist roses lightly on the top of the bloom & on the leaves. Please note that some other flowers will not respond well to misting.
